Department of Philosophy and Culturology
The purpose of the undergraduate study programme in Philosophy and Culture (double major) is the acquisition of the comprehensive understanding of the world and humans’ place in it, particularly focusing on the essence and meaning of culture. It enables students to interpret and critically analyse a wide range of human beliefs, attitudes, actions and theories, as well as to comment and interconnect the major texts and theories relative to culture. The programme provides students with essential knowledge of standard philosophical disciplines and develops their analytical, interpretative and argumentative skills.
In the first year, students acquire basic knowledge of standard problems of philosophy and cultural studies, philosophical and cultural anthropology, ancient Greek philosophy, one classical (Greek or Latin) and one foreign language, and the norms of the Croatian language in both academic and non-academic discourse. In the second year, students broaden and deepen their knowledge of logic, acquire knowledge of basic metaphysical and ethical theories, philosophy of culture and become familiar with the middle ages and the renaissance and early modern philosophy. In the third year, students acquire knowledge of basic epistemological and aesthetic theories, as well as the fundamentals of the Enlightenment philosophy and Classical German philosophy, modern philosophy, philosophy of history and social philosophy. The bachelor thesis is written during the sixth semester.
