Postgraduate Doctoral Study of Philosophy

About the programme

The doctoral programme in Philosophy provides specialised philosophical knowledge and competences related to intrinsically philosophical content within standard branches of research, such as logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, bioethics, aesthetics, social, political and legal philosophy, philosophy of culture, philosophy of history, philosophy of globalisation, philosophy of language, philosophy of media and communication, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, and the history of philosophy, with particular emphasis on the history of Croatian philosophy.

At the same time, students acquire interdisciplinary knowledge within the areas of contact between philosophy and particular fields of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, such as literature, art, linguistics, philology, sociology, psychology, cognitive science, physics, biology, and mathematics. A doctoral programme profiled in this way prepares students for scientific research in philosophy and interdisciplinary fields, as well as for work at universities, public research institutes, and other higher education and scientific institutions.

Teaching and academic excellence

Teaching in the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Croatian Studies is delivered by the Faculty’s academic staff employed at the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies. Their academic competitiveness is confirmed by published papers in renowned national and international journals and publications, participation in national and international scientific conferences, and research stays at foreign universities.

Since scientific research in the field of philosophy is primarily directed towards the conceptual and methodological clarification of the global project of knowledge, the application of such results in teaching and other forms of study within the doctoral programme in Philosophy at the Faculty of Croatian Studies plays an important role in the development of a knowledge-based society.

Admission requirements

The doctoral programme in Philosophy lasts three years, that is, six semesters, and comprises 180 ECTS credits, including the fulfilment of all study obligations as well as the completion and defence of the doctoral dissertation. Upon completion of the programme, students obtain the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

The programme may be enrolled by students who have completed a graduate study programme in Philosophy with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Applicants must have a minimum overall grade point average of 4.0. If the average is lower, but not lower than 3.5, two recommendations from university teachers are required. Applicants with a lower average who have published scientific and/or professional papers may be admitted on the basis of a decision of the Admissions Committee.

The doctoral programme in Philosophy at the Faculty of Croatian Studies may also be enrolled by applicants who have not completed a graduate study programme in Philosophy, but rather a graduate programme in another scientific field or area. In such cases, before the start of the doctoral programme, they are required to undergo a knowledge assessment, that is, to pass differential examinations.

In assessing applicants for admission, in addition to the necessary formal requirements, consideration is also given to their readiness for serious and active participation in the programme, scientific and professional activities such as published papers and participation in scientific conferences, the need for their engagement in scientific research projects, and the need for their involvement in teaching at the Faculty of Croatian Studies or another higher education institution.

Admission to the doctoral programme in Philosophy is based on the results of a public call for applications. The decision on admission is made by the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Croatian Studies upon the proposal of the Council for Postgraduate Studies, based on the report of a three-member Admissions Committee that reviews applications and conducts admission interviews with applicants.
