Assistant Professor Matija Mato Škerbić, PhD is a faculty member at the Department of Philosophy and Culture, Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, Croatia. He is a pioneer in the fields of philosophy and ethics of sport, and the first to introduce the bioethics of sport in Croatia.
Dr. Škerbić serves as a president of the European Association for the Philosophy of Sport.
Dr. Škerbić was the first to earn a PhD in the philosophy of sport from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. In 2019, he defended his dissertation, William John Morgan’s Ethics of Sport, under the mentorship of Prof. Ante Čović, graduating with the highest distinction, summa cum laude.
He is the author of two seminal books: Philosophy of Sport: Emergence and Development of the Discipline (2021) and Bioethics of Sport: Challenges for the Future of Sports (2024), both of which are the first of their kind in Croatia and the region. Dr. Škerbić has published over 40 scientific papers, chapters, editorials, and reviews in Croatian and international publications, and is a member of the editorial boards of Philosophical Research and Synthesis Philosophica.
Dr. Škerbić has delivered lectures at more than 70 international conferences, including prestigious events such as the World Congress of Philosophy (Beijing, China, and Rome, Italy), the World Congresses of Philosophy of Sport (Oslo, Norway, 2018; Kyoto, Japan, 2019; Penn State, USA, 2022; and Split, Croatia, 2023), the European Congress of Philosophy of Sport (Paris, France, 2021; Leuven, Belgium, 2023), and meetings of the British Society for the Philosophy of Sport (Oxford, UK, 2019; Swansea, Wales, 2018 and 2022; Aberdeen, Scotland, 2024).
He is the founder and head of the Research Committee for Bioethics and Sport (established in 2017) and the Ethics, Bioethics, and Sport Conference (initiated in 2018), both groundbreaking initiatives in Croatia and the region. Since 2021, he has been an associate of the Sport Ethics Colloquium at Pennsylvania State University’s Rock Ethics Institute, led by Prof. Francisco Javier Lopez Frias.
In 2023, Dr. Škerbić served as the initiator and president of the Organizing Committee for the 50th World Congress of Philosophy of Sport in Split, Croatia, a collaboration between the University of Zagreb, the University of Split (Faculty of Kinesiology), and the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP). He also serves as the Chair for the Philosophy of Sport Section at the 25th World Congress of Philosophy, Philosophy Across Boundaries, to be held in Rome, Italy, in August 2024.
As an educator, he lectures on philosophy and ethics of sport at the Faculty of Kinesiology (University of Zagreb), the Faculty of Kinesiology (University of Split), University of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and the University of Latvia (Riga, Latvia).
Dr. Škerbić is also the author of the first children’s book on ancient philosophers, titled Philosophy – What the Heck is That?! 13 Stories about Ancient Philosophers (2019).
