Description:
The aim of this course is to introduce students to various models of civil, military, religious, secret, and magical societies throughout history, from antiquity to the contemporary period, which formed part of the cultural everyday life of different human communities and, to a greater or lesser extent, influenced not only daily life but also the political, religious, and legal contexts of various historical periods. The course addresses ancient mystery cults such as the Eleusinian and Orphic mysteries, Roman Mithraism, medieval confraternities, religious and secular chivalric orders of the Middle Ages and the early modern period, Freemasons and other related speculative societies, as well as magical societies such as the Golden Dawn, O.T.O., Theosophy, and Anthroposophy.
Learning outcomes:
  1. Explain the theoretical approaches to researching the phenomenon of association into various types of societies and how this affects human life and everyday experience.
  2. Define all key terms from the phenomenology of religious, military, and civil societies covered in the course.
  3. Interpret the mutual influences between Europe and the Croatian historical space with regard to all these types of societies, and assess the extent of their presence within the Croatian historical context
