All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
To introduce students to the basic theory and concepts of palliative care.
During the course, students will gain the necessary knowledge about the patient's psychological reactions to incurable disease; important features of the patient-family-palliative care professional relationship as well as relationships between team members; delivering bad news and bereavement.
Special emphasis will be placed on acquiring knowledge about the treatment of total pain with various therapeutic options as well as on the psychological aspects of dying and death.

Learning outcomes at the level of the programme to which the course contributes:
To choose models of psychological assessment and counselling for individuals, groups and organizations.
To critically evaluate professional and scientific psychological and related disciplines literature and to create new scientific knowledge.
To argue the similarities, differences and usability of psychological interventions and interventions within complementary disciplines in the field of social and biomedical sciences.
To critically assess the outcomes and consequences of one's own professional work, as well as one's own professional competencies, knowledge and skills in accordance with changes and standards of the profession and national and European regulations.
To support cooperation in interdisciplinary teamwork and create constructive professional relationships with experts in collaborative disciplines.
To analyse and, in the context of European and/or world research, interpret and evaluate the findings of identical psychological research conducted in Croatia.

Expected learning outcomes at the level of the course:
1. To understand the basic concepts of palliative care
2. To understand the importance of physical, psychological, social and spiritual issues affecting palliative patients and their families
3. To apply appropriate psychodiagnostic procedures in psychological assessment of patients and their families
4. To recognize the psychosocial and spiritual needs of the palliative patient and their families
5. To distinguish palliative care from hospice care
6. To identify End of Life issues
7. To identify the needs of family members in bereavement

1. Introduction to palliative care: basic features of palliative care; historical development of palliative care in Croatia and in the world
2. Bio-psycho-social and spiritual approach to the palliative patient and family members; bioethical and legal aspects of palliative care
3. Total pain
4. Multidisciplinary palliative care team
5. Communication skills in palliative care; delivering bad news
6. Psychological aspects of palliative care
7. Psychological assessment in palliative care
8. Counselling and Psychotherapy modalities in palliative care
9. Peculiarities of geriatric palliative care
10. Peculiarities of pediatric palliative care
11. Hospice care
12. Psychological aspects of dying and death; the concept of "good death"
13. Grief and bereavement
14. Professional role of psychologists in palliative care
15. Final considerations; colloquium
