Description:
Give an overview and insight into the complexity of modern cities and urban society while utilizing selected examples of Croatian cities while keeping in mind the context of European phenomena of urban development.
The growth and development of cities were among the most visible factors of modernity in the 19th and 20th centuries.
This course shall acquaint the students with the social changes and urban processes in the 19th and 20th centuries, the relationship of the city towards its environment, urban construction, population growth, housing, defining and experiencing urban space, cities as sites of power and the general political, cultural, social and economic characteristic of the development of modern cities based on Croatian examples, within a European and global context.
The students will familiarize themselves with various methodological approaches to urban history and modern methods of researching the city.

Learning outcomes at the level of the programme to which the course contributes:
Recognizing the interdisciplinary features of history and their relevance for other aspects of knowledge and for promoting a series of moral, social and cultural values.
Present various information and viewpoints in a conceptually clear fashion, as well as critically evaluating the validity of claims, premises and arguments present in various media.
Evaluate historical facts and processes in national, European and world history, as well as the issues pertaining to their interpretation.


After successfully finishing the course, students will be able to:
1. explain and analyse phenomena, processes and structures in modern cities based on selected examples
2. apply contemporary methods of historical science in the research of urban history
3. analysing various written or visual sources connected to urban history in the 19th and 20th centuries
4. critically interpret academic and expert literature
5. acquire knowledge on various urban and social changes in the 19th and 20th centuries, while comparing and contrasting the said changes
6. individually write an academic text
7. apply knowledge and skills acquires in this course on other research issues

1. Introductory lecture: themes, historiography, methodology, assignments and student responsibilities. Allocating seminar topics
2. What is the modern city?
3. Time: the historical legacy of modern cities
4. Citizen: population, migrations and mobility
5. Space and environment: urbanism and architecture
6. Power: cities and politics
7. Factory: economic development and infrastructure
8. Street and square: public spaces
9. Apartment: private spaces
10. Church: space of worship
11. Theatre, cafe, cinema: spaces of leisure
12. Escape from the city: "discovering" nature, travel, tourism
13. Destroying the city: war, renewal, sites of memory
14. Imaginary: visions of the city
15. Concluding debate
