The Department of Sociology was established in 1992 and is one of the core disciplines of the Faculty of Croatian Studies. The concept of sociology studies focuses on the application of sociological theories and social science methodology for understanding social processes and phenomena in the specific context of Croatian society and comparatively in a European and global perspective. The study of sociology aims to train highly qualified sociological research personnel with professional research and analytical skills necessary for productive work in the public and private sectors. The sociology program at the bachelor's and master's levels is organized according to current international scientific standards.

On Thursday, 8 October, Assistant Professor Ivan Perkov appeared in a segment on RTL Direkt addressing recurring cases of corruption in which public officials use public money for personal purposes—from meals and expensive hotel stays to various purchases and private entertainment.
Perkov pointed out that this is an almost textbook definition of corruption: using publicly entrusted resources and powers for private purposes. He also stressed that such practices are not new but have been recurring in Croatian society for decades, often without stronger and more sustained public condemnation.
He added that, at times, some members of the public appear not only to inadequately condemn such behaviour but also to view it with a degree of envy towards those in a position to use public resources for personal gain. This attitude towards the abuse of public office makes it even more difficult to create a social climate in which corruption is regarded as unequivocally unacceptable.
