5th International Summer School of the Latin Language and Croatian Neo-Latin Culture

The University of Zagreb Faculty of Croatian Studies, in collaboration with the Institute for the Promotion of Humanism Amygdala, is pleased to announce the 5th International Summer School of the Latin Language and Croatian Neo-Latin Culture, which will take place at the Akademis Academia in Dubrovnik from 13 to 23 July 2026.

Concept and Aims of the School

The school is designed for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, as well as for anyone who wishes to gain knowledge of the Latin language. The teaching approach is based on the inductive speaking method Lingua Latina per se illustrata. In addition to mastering the basics of the Latin language, the mission of the school is to present Croatian Latinist authors and their texts, which are studied through various workshops.

Lectures and Activities

The school is organised by Petar Uskovic Croata (University of Zagreb Faculty of Croatian Studies), alumnus of the Academy Vivarium Novum (Rome). Classes are held daily and last four hours, including language exercises and workshops. In addition to acquiring knowledge of spoken Latin, participants will have the opportunity to explore the sights of the city of Dubrovnik, as part of the instruction and text reading will take place in situ. All activities will be conducted in Latin or English.

Who Can Apply?

The 5th International Summer School of the Latin Language and Croatian Neo-Latin Culture addresses BA, MA, and early-stage PhD students from all areas of early modern studies who wish to acquire or deepen their knowledge of the Neo-Latin language and literature, as well as its methodological tools. Participants are not expected to possess sufficient knowledge of Latin.

Venue and Accommodation

All participants will be accommodated at the Akademis Center in Dubrovnik in double rooms (or single rooms upon personal request) with private bathroom facilities. The center includes classrooms for lectures, a restaurant, and a café bar. The Old Town is located a 30-minute walk away or 5 minutes by public city transport. Participants are required to arrange their own travel to the Summer School venue.

Costs and Application Procedure

Participation in the Summer School costs €970 per person. The price includes:

• 11 nights of accommodation with breakfast included at the Akademis Center
• Participation in all lectures and workshops
• A guided tour of Dubrovnik’s Old Town
• Course materials

Početni tečaj

Polaznici ovoga tečaja Ljetne škole latinskoga jezika i kulture ne trebaju imati prethodno znanje latinskoga jezika ili mogu biti upućeni u njegove osnove. Tečaj se sastoji od prvih trinaest poglavlja udžbenika Familia Romana u kojima se polaznici upoznaju s osnovama latinskoga jezika i temeljnim vokabularom.

Nakon završetka početnoga tečaja polaznicima se preporučuje pohađanje naprednoga tečaja.

Trajanje tečaja: 2 tjedna
Broj školskih sati: 50 sati

Napredni tečaj

Kod polaznika naprednoga tečaja pretpostavlja se znanje latinskoga jezika prema metodi Lingua Latina per se illustrata, te je poželjno da su se polaznici susreli s barem prvih deset poglavlja udžbenika Familia Romana.

U naprednom tečaju polaznici usvajaju napredniji vokabular i frazeologiju, komentiraju jednostavnije latinske tekstove u manjim konverzacijskim grupama te apsolviraju veći dio udžbenika, osposobljavajući se za samostalno čitanje i razumijevanje izvornih latinskih tekstova.
